Ariaantje Coeymans: Enigmatic Colonial Dutch Woman
RAVENA - The next monthly meeting of the Ravena-Coeymans Historical Society will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Village Hall, 15 Mountain Road in Ravena. Karen Hess will speak on Ariaantje Coeymans: Enigmatic Colonial Dutch Woman.
Karen Hess is a retired elementary school teacher in Glenville, NY. As a docent at the Albany Institute of History & Art, Karen became interested in the full length portrait of Ariaantje Coeymans painted by Nehemiah Partridge. This painting is the earliest full size portrait of a woman in colonial America but very little is known about her. Karen’s quest for information about Ariaantje (1672-1743) brought her to the Town of Coeymans, to the Historical Society, and to local residents. Upon completion of her research, she was asked to make a presentation at the 2009 New York State Historical Society Annual Convention in Plattsburg, NY. Come Sunday, January 10th to learn more about this amazing woman from whose family our town gets its name.
This program is open to the community. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. Please note that both the January and March meetings will be the second Sunday of the month and the February meeting will be the third Sunday of the month at 2 p.m.
